10/32 War Memorial
near junction of
Doncaster Road and
Clifton Lane

War memorial. 1922 by Major J. E. Knight of Rotherham (Rotherham Advertiser).
Granite stylobate to ashlar sandstone monument. Large cenotaph with curtain
wall to rear. Plinth inscribed 'THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 / AND / THE WORLD WAR
1939-1945'; on the shaft the quotation "IF I SHOULD DIE, THINK ONLY THIS OF ME:
THAT THERE'S SOME CORNER OF A FOREIGN FIELD THAT IS FOR EVER ENGLAND". Shaft
decorated with wreaths and with a bronze sword on each return. Offset upper stage
with upright palm leaves carved on corners and the words 'FOR / REMEMBRANCE'
beneath a styalised sarcophagus with swags and cornice surmounted by a bronze
brazier with eternal flame. Curtain wall to rear with end piers flanking 13
bronze panels bearing dedication to, and names of, the 1304 men of Rotherham lost
in the 1914-1918 war. Unveiled on Sunday November 26th, 1922.
