Details
WEAVERHAM C.P. FOREST STREET SJ 67 SW (North Side) 4/58 No. 38 (The Old Grammar School) 9/3/1953 GV II
Formerly school, now house: founded 1638 by William Barker of Sandiway, converted to house c1920. Dressed tooled red sandstone blocks, Welsh slate roof, corner brick chimney. Rectangular 1-room plan. 2-storey, 3-bay front. Tall plinth. Left end bay has a rectangular doorcase with a heavy lintel above which has a flat moulded hood. Other bays have 3-light rebated chamfered stone mullioned windows. Right gable end has a tiebeam and collar truss with studs between. Rear has intact, though restored, fenestration. Interior: splayed reveals to the windows, no original features though present corner fireplace may suggest original position.
The school may have acted as the manor courthouse, into the C18, and was extensively damaged during the Civil War.
