House, barn and adjacent cottage. House (Hores Uppacott)circa late C16/early C17 with late C20 renovations, barn adjoining at left end probably C18. Colourwashed rendered cob with thatched roof hipped at left end over barn, gabled at end of wing. Right end stack (at junction with adjoining cottage), front lateral stack. L-plan house, the main range 2 rooms wide with a cross passage and shallow rear right wing. The right-hand room appears to be the late C16/early C17 hall heated from a stack opposite the passage, (an unusual feature in the region), the rear wing being the unheated inner room or possibly a stair wing added at a later date. The lower end is heated from the front lateral stack. The hall stack formerly had an adjacent stair turret and bread oven. 2-room plan cottage adjoins at right end. 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 5-window front with front lateral stack to left of centre and front door into through passage to right of stack. Doorway to barn adjoining at left. Fenestration of 2- and 3-light casement windows with glazing bars. The rear elevation faces directly on to the road; the projecting wing has three 2-light casements, 6 panes per light in the gable end and a similar casement to the main range. Interior Several features of interest. The hall has a chamfered cross beam with step stops. The long timber lintel of the fireplace survives, hearth blocked and subdivided. An oak plank and muntin screen to the left of the passage survives, plastered on the left-hand side. The lateral stack has 1 granite ashlar jamb, the left-hand jamb has been refaced chamfered lintel with ogee stops; chamfered cross beam with step stops. A stair has been inserted in the rear of the passage. No access to roofspace at time of survey (1985) but the roof timbers may be of interest. The interior of the adjoining barn is partly lofted and has pegged roof trusses probably of the C18. The house and adjoining barn form a handsome range on the roadside. The cottage adjoining at the right (Upcott) has a lower thatched roof gabled at the right end and a projecting right gable end stack; single-storey lean-to to the rear (facing the road). Interior of Upcott not inspected, Upcott included for group value. These properties form a group with Great Uppacott on a corner site dominated by picturesque cob and thatch buildings.
