Old farmhouse, probably of C15 origin, originally an open-hall house, with C17 and C19 alterations, in course of restoration at time of survey (October, 1984); attached to east, the new farmhouse of early C18, with some later alterations. Old farmhouse of random pennant rubble, double Roman tiled roof (replaced stone tiles), earth and lime mortar, mostly earth; new house of finely coursed pennant rubble, stone dressings, half-hipped pantiled roof with brick stacks to rear, some courses of stone tiles at front eaves. Old house originally of 3-room plan, room to east, central open hall and smaller room to west; slightly later addition of brewhouse to rear forming L-plan. New house has wide central hall, symmetrical front. North front of old house of 1½ storeys, 3 windows, to right and left formerly doors, central porch with stone tiled pitched roof and small lancet to left, 2 small gables, to left and over porch, (hall to right), all doors and windows of C20 restoration. Right return has door and small light, right return of rear brewhouse has window. Rear has brewhouse attached to left with door and window, blocked window in gable end; main house has 4 windows and door, 2 large gables, with 2 windows to left and one to right, small single storey addition to right. New house has front to south, of 3 storeys and 3 windows, ground floor has 2 wooden cross windows with wedge-shaped heads and keystones, tall central 8-panelled door with C19 flat stone hood on brackets; first floor has sash to left, central C19 round-headed window with 2-light casement in lower section, upper section painted, relieving arch with limestone imposts and keystone, cross window to right, outer windows with slightly cambered heads; 2nd floor has three 2-light casements, 15 panes each; projecting quoin strips and eaves cornice. Right return has 3 windows at ground floor with cambered heads, sash to left, 2 to right blocked, 3 windows at first floor and 3 at 2nd, all blocked except 2nd floor right 2-light casement; 2-light cellar window to left. Left return has 2-light window at 2nd floor left, gable stack of old house attached to wall. Rear has two 2-light casements at ground floor, upper one lighting stair, door with small porch, first floor has 2-light casement to left and right, 3 blocked and painted 2-light casements under eaves. Interior of old house has former kitchen to east, chamfered and scroll-stopped beams, closely spaced joists, chamfered and stopped fireplace lintel; suspended from ceiling a fine bacon-rack with shallow moulding and row of dentils along each side, ball-pendant at each corner; south wall battered, other features removed during restoration. Interior of new house has dog-leg stair to rear of hall with narrow central well, 2 straight flights joined by winders, moulded handrail, turned balusters, open string. Front right room has raised and fielded panelling and moulded cornice, originally best parlour, rear right little parlour, to left servants' hall and pantry. House owned by Smyth family of Long Ashton, probate inventory of 1741 includes description, including old house used concurrently. (Sources: Hall, L. : unpublished survey, NMR).
