MARKET PLACE 1. 1633 Nos 2 to 4 (consec) (Part of premises occupied by Field's and including Waterloo House and Barretts Flat) SY 1287 1/259 II GV 2. Circa 1810. 3 storey stucco faced houses. Later alterations with shop fronts on ground floor. Nos 2 and 3 have parapet with coping swept up either end and between them. No 4 instead of parapet, has a later wood balustrade of turned balusters with terminal piers. Moulded cornice This front is flanked above ground floor by partly fluted pilasters. 2 dormers to each house. Symmetrical fenestration: No 2 has 3 windows, the outer ones tripartite recessed sashes, glazing bars intact. No 3 has 4 recessed camber headed sash windows, glazing bars intact, flat arches with voussoirs and keystones. No 4 has 2 wide sash windows, glazing bars intact, flush frames of fluted pilasters with moulded cornices breaking forward over them. Mid and later C19 shop front on ground floor. No 2 has 2 large windows of 4 and 3-light with thin mullions, splayed lights into marginal glazed door with fielded panel, rectangular marginal glazed fanlight. Deep frieze and moulded cornice carried across front. No 3 has a side door (entrance to "Waterloo House") recessed, of 4 moulded panels, female head knocker, large rectangular fanlight, panelled reveals and panelled pilasters to front. Adjoining shop window of 3 large thin mullioned lights, projects with frieze and cornice as on No 2. No 4 has good mid C19 double shop front with 5-light windows bowed out from door. Thin mullions and one extra light to right. Shallow rise is articulated by small turned balusters. The shop door is glazed with one fielded panel, rectangular fanlight. Soffit panelled out to front. To left and right of front the frieze is supported by scrolled brackets with leaf ornament and "Medusa" heads in caps over. The frieze is obscured by blind case. The moulded cornice with anthemion band has a row of rosette blocks below it with pendent finials.
Nos 2 to 4 (consec) form an important group in Market Place together with No 1 Church Street.
