HOLME HOLME FEN NATURE TL 28 NW RESERVE 6/43 Two marker posts situated on the south-east side of Holme Lode
II
Two marker posts A and B. Post A erected in 1851 by Wm Wells replacing an earlier wooden post of 1848, post B erected in 1957. Cast iron. The two posts were erected to mark the shrinkage of the peat as the water table was lowered when Whittlesea Mere was drained. Post A originally from the Crystal Palace Exhibition hall; it is a fluted column with an octagonal base and is supported on poles with iron ties. Post B is an octagonal column mounted on a concrete base, the metal plaques are inscribed with ground levels and corresponding dates. Whittlesea Mere of which the nature reserve is a small surviving part was drained between 1849 and 1853. The nature reserve is managed by the Nature Conservancy Council. Wells, W.
