SE2233SW LS28 LIDGET HILL (east side) PUDSEY National Westminster 6/136 Bank - II

Bank. Late C19. Ashlar, Westmorland green-slate roof. Fills a corner site. 2 storeys with basement and attics. 5-bay symmetrical facade with gabled canted ends. Plinth. Archivolted arched portal with engaged polished granite Composite columns supporting cornice surmounted by heraldic beasts with shields flanking blocking course with "BANK" in raised lettering. Flanking portal are small keyed-arched windows. 3-light cruciform window above flanked by single lights with transoms articulated by Ionic pilasters. Above is similar 3-light window in steep finialled gable flanked by ogee-domed pinnacles. Outer bays have cruciform windows of 3 lights to ground floor and 2 lights to 1st floor. Under lst-floor window is a carved panel. Balustraded parapet. Canted ends have similar windows, that to left has lst-floor balcony, that to right segmental lst-floor oriel. Hipped roof with ends under separate pitched gables. Stack set above 1st bay. Left-hand return of 3 bays. Outer bays have transomed window. Other bays and 1st floor have windows with chamfered lintels and projecting sills with above 1st and 2nd bays gabled dormers with flush 4-pane sashes in architraves. Stack to rear gable.

Has similar elements of design as the National Westminster Bank, Queen Street, Morley (q.v.), and No 10 Bradford Road, (the National Westminster Bank), Brighouse (q.v.) designed by C. S. Nelson (Leeds) in 1895 for the London and Yorkshire Bank Ltd. It is possible this bank is of similar date and by the same architect.
