Details

NORTH MOLTON FORE STREET, SS 7229-7329 18/152 Higher Poole Farmhouse - GV II Farmhouse. Probably early to mid C17 with probably late C18 or early C19 additions and mid C20 alterations. Rendered cob with dressed stone right-hand gable end, and uncoursed stone rubble addition. Partly rendered at rear, and left-hand gable end with C20 corrugated-iron cladding. Gable-ended corrugated-asbestos roof, formerly thatched. Stone stacks with weatherings, tops rebuilt in C19 red brick. Plan and development: C17 two-room central-entrance plan facing south-west, with end stacks, right-hand one external. Central entrance passage and central shallow rectangular projection to front. Unheated one-roomed (probable) addition to left, with entrance to front. The right hand doorway and entrance passage are said to be C20 alterations, although it is possible that the doorway is original, but was latterly-blocked, possibly when left-hand part with new entrance added. Probably early C19 one-room kitchen wing to rear of centre with external end stack. Lean-to additions to left-hand gable end and at rear of left-hand end, and lean-to dairy (probaby also an addition) to north-west of rear wing. Two storeys with one-storey lean-to additions. Exterior: Asymmetrical front. Three windows to first floor and 2 to ground floor; late C20 two-light wooden and metal casements. C20 half-glazed door between first and second windows from right (centre of 2-room range) with C20 rendered gabled porch. Old front doorway to left with early C19 six panelled door (lower 2 panels side- beaded flush, middle raised and upper glazed). External stack to right-hand gable end with chamfered offset. Kitchen wing at rear with C20 casements. Lean-to bread oven to rear gable end. Lean-to dairy to north-east side of kitchen wing has 2-light wooden casements with wooden lintels, wrought-iron bars and internal wooden shutters. Interior: Central ground floor room has pair of C17 deep-chamfered cross beams with stepped runout stops. Cased beams in right-hand ground-floor rooms. Kitchen with plain cross beam.
