Details
PREES C.P. FAULSGREEN SJ 53 SE 7/69 Moat House - - II Farmhouse, now house. Late C16 and early C17 with later additions and alterations. Timber framed with rendered infill and plinth; machine tile roof. Hall range in 2 unequal framed bays with slightly later 2-bay gabled cross-wing projecting to right; hall range apparently formerly extended further to left but truncated and rebuilt to left of stack late C20. One storey and attic. Framing: square and rectangular panels, 3 from cill to wall-plate with short straight tension braces and V- struts from collars to cross-wing; prominent gabled jettied full dormer to hall range has diagonal struts, cusped quatrefoil above bressumer and V-struts from collar. Irregular fenestration; late C20 leaded mullion windows and casements said to be in imitation of original windows, one of 5 lights to dormer with 2 casements directly below and another casement to far right to hall range; gable of cross-wing has one window on each floor. Mullioned and transomed window to rear dormer of hall range probably partly original but much restored. Entrance through late C20 gabled rendered porch to left of hall range with late C20 French window to left wall of cross-wing. Red brick ridge stack to left of hall range and integrall lateral stack with dentilled band to right wall of cross- wing. C20 gabled porch to back wall of hall range has datestone "H/RS/ 1702" said formerly to have been in the back wall and possibly referring to the cladding or rebuilding of that wall (now rendered) in brick. Interior: timber frame exposed throughout with wattle and daub infill visible to several panels; ground-floor rooms have moulded and chamfered ceiling beams and heavy joists; rebuilt red brick fireplaces with segmental arches; plank and muntin doors throughout. Single-purlin collar and tie beam roofs to both hall range and cross-wing have exposed trusses and straight windbraces. The house stands within a well-preserved but now dry square-shaped moat.
