WITNEY MARKET SQUARE SP3509N (West side) 10/192 No.16 (Batt House) 14/05/52 GV II*
House. c,1725. Limestone ashlar; gabled stone slate roof; stone end stacks. Central -staircase plan. Early Georgian style. 3 storeys; symmetrical 5-window range. Early C18 six-panelled door with overlight set in line pedimented doorcase with Tuscan pilasters. Raised architraves, with triple keyblocks except to attic, to late C19 plate-glass sashes. Raised chamfered quoins; raised storey bands; moulded cornice beneath parapet. Gabled dormers. C18 L-shaped wing to rear left: of partly roughcast limestone rubble, with gabled concrete tile roof and stone slate roof to rear; early C19 sashes to rear. Rear of main block has early C18 stair turret and mid C19 lean-to extension with reset C18 two-light window. Interior: C18 panelled doors. Hall has stone flag floor and moulded door architraves with pulvinated friezes; fine dog-leg with landing staircase with turned balusters set on closed string. Room to left has panelled dado, bayleaf-moulded architraves to windows and moulded cornice. Room to right has bolection panelling, dentilled cornice and moulded architrave to fireplace flanked by bracketed stands and keyed segmental-arched alcoves. Cased beams in rear wing.
