ST ISSEY SEA MILLS SW 97 SW 4/241 Slip, quay and retaining walls
GV II
Slip, quay and retaining walls. Circa C18, probably with earlier origins. Slate stone rubble. Slip from area to north west of Sea Mills millhouse (qv) into a creek of a tributary of the River Camel, constructed of slate stone rubble with pitched and horizontally coursed slate stone retaining walls to east; these walls have been partly rebuilt in the C20. Directly to the west is the quay or jetty on which the tide mill stood and where the foundations are still visible. Sea Mills was previously known as Sea Water Mills. The first reference to a mill was that of a grist mill in 1675 and in 1810, 1816 and 1846 a 3-storey stone building was offered for sale. Ceased operation in 1899 when the Padstow railway viaduct was erected across the mouth of estuary, restricting the flow of water to the mill pond (qv) and the access of cargo ships to the mill. Sites and Monuments Register, Truro, Cornwall. Rawe, D and Ingrey, J Padstow and District 1984.
