ST ISSEY TREGONCE SW 97 SW 4/246 Tregonce Farmhouse on south of settlement at Tregonce

II

Farmhouse. Circa C17, possibly with earlier orgins. Stone rubble. Bitumen coated and cement washed rag slate roof with gable end on right, hipped end on left and hipped ends to the 2 rear wings. End, axial and side lateral stacks with brick shafts. Plan: Interior not accessible at time of survey (1987) and the arrangement of the plan is uncertain. The original house probably had an overall 'U' shaped plan with entrance near centre. The front range has a through or cross passage flanked by 2 rooms heated by end stacks and the 1-room plan wings to rear right and left heated by side lateral stacks. The ground slopes down steeply to the left. In the circa C18 or early C19 the house was further extended on the higher right hand side with a range of 1-room plan heated by an end stack. In the C20 the lower end wall appears to have been partly rebuilt and the front left hand room and part of the rear wing is now used as a store. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4:1 window front with the ground sloping down to the left. The lower end on left has been partly rebuilt and there is a large C20 opening to left with two C20 doors near centre. C20 sash to right and C20 sash to far right in circa C18 extension. First floor has four C20 sashes with a sash to the far right in the extension. Rear elevation largely unaltered, the 2-storey wings with hipped ends and C19 casements. C19 single storey outshot extension between, to rear of passage. Interior: Not accessible at time of survey. A full interior inspection may help date this farmhouse more accurately and may reveal several interesting features.
