Details
BRADFIELD BUCKHOLD SU 67 SW 7/2 St. Andrew's School, (Buckhold House), And Adjoining Garden Walls And Gateways - II House, now school. 1884-5, by Alfred Waterhouse, with C20 additions to north-west. Red brick with raised diapering in bands and in gables with toothed verges, mullioned and transomed windows with sashes and buff terracotta dressings, and shaped and plain tile hanging. Old tile roofs with 10 stacks, truncated bellcote on ridge to north, irregularly placed dormers and C20 flat dormers, and steeply pitched octagonal tile roof with lead ball finial over corner turret to south-east. Irregular plan. 2 storeys and attic, and 3 storeys and attic to north-west. South- west front: main elements include: 3 storey and attic gabled block projecting to left with first floor oriel and blank arcading, central supporting buttress, and second floor corbelled out above. 2 storey gabled projection off-centre to right with central 4-panelled door. 2 storey and attic gabled projection off centre to right with French casements, blank terracotta panel in tympanum above, and C20 first floor balcony. 2 storey octagonal turret to right with cusped arch blank arcading between floors. North-east front: main elements include: gable end to left with central stack. 2 storey and attic gabled projection off-centre to left with 2 central 6-panelled doors and moulded surround; timber framed gabled porch with curved braces, tiled roof, decorated barge boards, stained glass windows in sides and two 6-panelled doors; blank arcading between floors above and central date panel. 2 storey and attic gabled projection off-centre to right with first floor pilaster strips. 3 storey and attic gabled block projecting to right with upper storeys corbelled out over ground floor rounded corners. Brick and terracotta wall projecting to south-west with buttresses, moulded coping and central moulded arch with gable above and 'W' in terracotta panel in tympanum. Brick and terracotta wall projecting to east with moulded coping, buttress with finial to east, and central flat archway with dentils and timber gable above. Interior: entrance hall has 8 Doulton ceramic wall panels, 4 large including scenes of Doulton's Lambeth works, Lambeth Place and the quay at Delft, and 4 small with various rural and urban scenes. Library contains fitted bookshelves and gallery. Ground floor room in turret to south-east contains 2 wooden wall cupboards with inlaid ivory decoration. School owns original signed drawings of house and other estate buildings. Landscaped grounds. B.0.E, Berkshire, p. 103;
