1/5 Harley House 500 metres along lane - on E of Woodside

House. C17 or earlier, altered c.1920. 2 storeys, timberframed, plastered facing S, with Arts and Crafts gable entrance created on E end facing the lane. Red tiled gabled roof with tall C17 central chimney one-third from E end, with 3 conjoined diagonal shafts. Small external gable chimney at W. 3-unit, former lobby entry plan with back-to back fireplaces at upper end of hall. Modern lean-to at service end (W). A 2 storeys addition along the N side c.1920 provides corridors and stairs and the timber frame and wall plate are exposed inside, showing that the walls have been heightened and the roof reconstructed. Weathered timberframing is exposed in the W lean-to. The parlour has an axial chamfered beam and squared joists, a C17, depressed, 4- centred arched brick fireplace (reused brick built in has 'IC 1840'), and C18 3-light casement window on S. Hall (middle room) has probable inserted floor on heavy chamfered cross beam with wide flat joists running axially. Heavy ogee-moulded shelf over fireplace. Square 2 storeys bay window on S c.1920. Fine C17, 4- centred chamfered brick fireplace in chamber over hall. S front of one and a half storeys has timber member at former eaves level. Early C18 2-light and 3-light mullioned wooden windows with iron casements. 2 storeys gabled square bay c.1920, with matching 4-light window, and false timbering and bargeboard to gable. Small windows under eaves. E gable-end plastered and upper floor projecting on brackets at old tie beam level. False timbering and roughcast. Plank door in brickwork at right. 3- light leaded casements.
