NORTH NIBLEY STANCOMBE PARK ST 7396 at NGR ST 73879694 8/124 Two tunnels and lakeside grotto II
Tunnel beneath former driveway. Tunnel under pathway leading to lakeside grotto. c1860 for Rev. David Edwards. Ashlar and roughly hewn marlstone; brick-lined tunnels. Short straight tunnel under driveway. Longer tunnel under pathway dividing either side of lakeside grotto. Entrances to north tunnel and north entrance of longer tunnel are round-arched in ashlar marlstone. At division of tunnels a small slit gives view into narrow end of grotto which widens out towards lake's edge; grotto contains sequence of small rock pools with running water. Southern entrances are formed by large marlstone blocks used in a naturalistic manner. Just within northern entrance of longer tunnel a niche to one side containing a carved lion statue, somewhat Chinese-looking. One of a sequence of features in the very extensive Regency and early Victorian landscaped park and pleasure garden. (B. Jones, Follies and Grottoes, 1974; and D. Verey, Gloucestershire: The Cotswolds, 1979.)
