House. Circa 1700, raised and extended late C18. Small 2 storeys and cellar, timberframed plastered, set on bank above road facing E. Low pitched slate roof gabled to N and S. Panelled fan pargetting to front. 2 windows to each floor and door central. Small flush box sash windows with 6/6 panes. Triple sash window to right of door. Rooflight in front slope of roof on left. Double fronted plan. Exposed timber frame inside shows the front part was originally single storey. Large kitchen fireplace in Flemish bond red brick in S room with oven to rear and salt recess in back with shouldered head. Timber sill plate and central post in S wall. Cellar under N room reached by central stair and has base for former chimney in middle of back wall, demolished when house extended and shared chimney built on N. Stop chamfered cross beam (re-used ?) over N room. Tie beams in gables and central partition exposed at waist level on upper floor. Walls have been raised 4 ft and flatter roof built, extending over C18, 2 storeys rear extension containing straight stair. Rear Ground floor room on N joined to front room has low, leaded, 3-light, early C18 mullioned window with iron casement. Single storey small rear lean-to. Interesting roll-moulded C16 timber window jamb re-used as joist over cellar. Reputed to be a rope-maker's house with long plot behind for ropewalk. Post Office adjoining on N was built as an extension to this house and had separate access to the cellar.
