Church of St Peter

II

Parish church. 1849. C&J Trubshaw. Roughly coursed and squared
rubble with scallop tiled roof. SW tower, nave with 2 lean-to
aisles and dormered clerestorey, chancel. Early English style.
EXTERIOR: W Door in base of tower, and SW doors in steep moulded.
Paired windows over, clock and paired bell chamber
lights in upper stage. Embattled parapet with angle pinnacles.
Spire planned but never built. Aisles divided into 5 bays (4
to south) by buttresses, each with lancet window. 3 steep
gabled dormers with lancet lights to roof. Vestry to NE.
Stepped triple lancet window to chancel.
INTERIOR: nave of 5 bays with stiffleaf capitals to
cylindrical piers. Western gallery with trefoiled traceried
panels and cast-iron rail. Arched braced roof with high set
collars carrying king posts. Patterned stained glass.
FITTINGS: font has blind trefoiled arcading to bowl carried on
clustered shafts. Elaborate woodwork lectern.
