18/76 Waterfoot Hotel
II
House now hotel. Circa 1808 for Mr Clarkson. Calciferous sandstone ashlar, with string course, eaves cornice and angle pilasters. Graduated greenslate roof with numerous candlestick chimney stacks. Earlier house has painted stucco walls, under graduated greenslate roof with brick chimney stacks on stucco bases. 2 storeys, 5 bays with lower right earlier house of 2 storeys, 8 bays of more than one build. Central panelled door and fanlight in projecting pilastered stone porch with bowed side lights. Sash windows with glazing bars in plain reveals, those on ground-floor with radial glazing bars in round arches and that over entrance bowed. Earlier house has irregular sash windows with glazing bars in painted stone surrounds. See, Nikolaus Pevsner, Buildings of England, Cumberland & Westmorland, 1967, p.284.
