Details
DURSLEY SILVER STREET ST 7598 (north side) 5/63 St. James' Parish Centre and churchyard wall including steps down into Broadwell GV II
Former national school, now parish rooms. Dated 1833; late C19 addition. Coursed rubble limestone with ashlar dressings; tile hanging; brick to rear; Welsh slate and plain tile roofs. Single-storey; attached 2-storey addition at south end. Front: symmetrical with central parapet gabled break forward having moulded Tudor-arched doorway with C20 glazed doors and sign fascia above. Plaque in gable read: 'NATIONAL/SCHOOL/1833'. Two 2-light casements either side with diagonal leaded casements and Tudor- arched heads under hoodmould. Wing to right has later C19 casements under half-hipped half dormers. North end: low-pitched parapet gable with 2 segmental-headed casements. South end: tile- hung with central timber framed bellcote gable and casement below. Open ground floor with central cast-iron pillar supporting timber beam. Rear: C20 fenestration and blocked Tudor-arched doorway. Churchyard wall runs from south-west corner of building to gateway at top of stone steps leading down into Broadwell; ball finials flanking C19 spear-topped iron gate. Boundary wall then runs along Broadwell and is interrupted by Tudor-arched opening with iron spear-topped gate. Forms part of grouping around Church of St James (q.v.) and in Broadwell (q.v.).
