II
Farmhouse. Probably early to mid C18, in 2 or more builds; altered and recently extended. Large dressed sandstone blocks, with rear wing of coursed squared sandstone and handmade red brick; stone slate roofs. T-plan formed by a rectangular single-depth 3-bay main range with a rear wing (and lean-to outbuilding to west side of this). Two storeys (and cellar), 3 windows, symmetrical; with a high moulded plinth carried round (except at rear of 3rd bay); central doorway with raised keystone on plain rectangular lintel, altered door; vertical-rectangular windows with large lintels and altered glazing. Gable chimneys. (Recent addition at left end.) The right-hand gable wall has a blocked 2-light mullioned cellar window. At the rear, the 1st bay has remains of a blocked window at mid level, now mostly covered by the lean-to. Two-bay rear wing in 2 builds, the first of stone raised in brick when the 2nd bay was added; altered windows on east side, lean-to addition on west side, with C20 glazed porch at rear end, and at 1st floor 2 low 4-light casement windows. INTERIOR: the main range has a lateral entrance hall formed by thick stone partition walls; the rooms either side, and both rooms in the rear wing, have beams with run-out chamfer; the rooms at 1st floor of the main range are noticeably higher than those at ground floor. HISTORY: associated with a spa or former holy well at or close to the site. Forms group with barn approx. 30m north (q.v.).
