House and adjoining wall. 1877-79, with mid C20 alterations.
Probably by George Gilbert Scott Jnr for John Spyvee Cooper.
Brick with pargeted panels and hipped plain tile roof with 2
panelled side wall stacks. Queen Anne style. Brick plinth,
string courses, rebated eaves, moulded gutter and brackets.
Windows mainly have brick flat arches. 2 storeys; 5-window
range. Recessed centre has an 8-pane sash and above, a hipped
dormer with a 2-light casement. Below, projecting brick
doorcase with cornice and recessed 4-panel door with the
overlight boarded-up. Projecting flanking bays have each a
pair of 8-pane sashes and above, a shouldered shaped gable
with a single wider 8-pane sash. Below, each has a large
6-pane casement replacing the bay window. Left return has to
left a pair of 8-pane sashes and below them, a canted brick
bay window with the windows boarded-up. To right, a boarded-up
window with a shaped brick hoodmould. To right, a coped brick
boundary wall with round-arched doorway and keystone to left,
forming a link to the adjoining house. This building is part
of a group of 8 houses by Scott, who was a leading exponent of
the Queen Anne style. They are said to be the sole surviving
examples of his highly regarded domestic architecture.
