ASHPRINGTON SX85NW TUCKENHAY 6/57 Riverside

GV II

House incorporating a former warehouse. Probably C18 with mid to late C19 and C20 alteration. Local limestone and slate rubble with rendered west end wall. Reed thatch roof with slate coping to the gable ends. Lateral stack at the front with a C20 brick shaft on a short brick shaft to the right hand gable end stack. Plan: Originally in the C18 the whole building may have been a warehouse and the right west end two thirds converted to a house in the mid to late C19. Alternatively the right hand two thirds may have been a house from the beginning with an integral warehouse at the left hand end which has a cartway on the ground floor and 2 storeys above with loading doors on the left hand gable end facing the quay on the creek. The right hand two thirds is 2 rooms wide with an entrance lobby and straight stairs between, the left hand room is the full depth of the house, the right hand is 2 rooms deep. In the C20 the house accommodation was entered into the cartway and warehouse to the left. Exterior: 2 storeys, at the left hand end it is 3 storeys. The north front has an asymmetrical 3-window arrangement disposed towards the right. The first floor has two 2-light casements and one 3-light casement to the right; the ground floor has a 3-light casement to the right and a C20 single light to the left of centre; except for the later windows all are late C19 with horizontal glazing bars and timber lintels. Doorway to right of centre with late C19 panelled door and C20 wooden lattice porch. To the left the former warehouse has a cartway with a segmental stone arch, now blocked and a C20 window inserted. The rear south elevation has 3 windows, symmetrically disposed late C19 2- light casements with horizontal glazing bars and wooden lintels; blocked doorway to left of centre and former cartway to right now filled with C20 glazed door and window with a slated canopy over. The left hand (east) end has former loading doors on all 3 storeys, the ground floor doorway blocked and the first and second floor doorways have windows inserted. Interior: was only partly inspected; it retains some mid to late C19 joinery.
