GV II

House, later part of King's Head hotel, now restaurant on ground floor and part of adjacent nursing home on upper floors. Late C18, possibly incorporating earlier fabric. Coursed squared stone with ashlar plinth, quoins and painted dressings; roof of thin slates. 3 low storeys; 3-window range. Central porch of tapered wood posts with cast-iron first-floor balcony to 6-panel door. Flanking canted bay windows have 16-pane sashes; painted stone surrounds to first-floor 16-pane sashes and second-floor 8-over-4-pane sashes. Low-pitched roof. INTERIOR: not inspected. HISTORY: plaque to right of door records that Charles Dickens stayed in this building in 1838 when it was part of the King's Head hotel and he was preparing `Nicholas Nickleby'.
