NZ1826 MANOR ROAD, St Helen Auckland 634-1/10/154 (North side (off)) Headstone to Thomas Corbett 20 metres east of Church of St Helen

GV II

Headstone approx 100m E of Church of St Helen. c1867. Signed J Watson, to Thomas Corbett of West Auckland Colliery. Sandstone slab 1m high in Gothic style. Gothic-arched heads to slab and to narrow side panels with tooled decoration. Inscription in variety of letter styles, Gothic, sans serif, sans serif italic, and upper and lower case cursive script. To commemorate Corbett `WHO WAS INSTANTANEOUSLY KILLED AT THE ABOVE NAMED COLLIERY, BY BEING THROWN INTO THE FLY WHEEL HOLE, WITH THE ROPE GETTING OUT OF ITS COURSE, WHICH HE WAS ASSISTING TO PUT ON TO THE DRUM OF THE ENGINE WHILE IN MOTION'. He was 17 years old. Erected by the bankmen of the colliery as a token of respect.
