KINGSDOWN PARADE, Kingsdown
(North West side)
Nos.65-101 (Odd)
GV
II
Terrace of 19 houses. c1792. Possibly by William Paty. Brick,
some stuccoed, with limestone dressings, rendered party wall
stacks and pantile mansard hip roof. Double-depth plan. Mid
Georgian style.
Each of 2 storeys, basement and attic; 2-window range.
Originally a symmetrical arrangement of handed pairs linked by
single-storey side entrance blocks, with a triple centrepiece;
most completed with a third window over the doorway, and
original arrangement only survives on Nos 71 & 73, 75 & 77 and
91.
Each has pilasters to a cornice and parapet, and a
ground-floor plat band; steps up to a pedimented doorcase with
fluted brackets, a 4-light fanlight and 6-panel door. Cambered
heads with 5 stepped voussoirs to 6/6-pane sashes, dormers
have 3/3-pane sashes or casements. No.101 has a 2-storey
canted bay, No.89 has a full attic storey, and No.65 is a
3-window range with a canted ground-floor bay. Rear elevations
have canted 3-light oriels with flat bases to Nos 67-71, 77-81
& 91-95.
INTERIOR: No.93, right-hand hall divided by an elliptical
arch, and dogleg stair with stick balusters, ramped rails and
column newels, which divide into 2 where rail meets them on
upper floors; ground-floor rooms are linked by an elliptical
arch with 2-leaf doors; marble fireplace with fluted shelf and
cast-iron fire basket; sash shutters to the front and rear,
6-panel doors, and cornices; the pointed-arched front door to
the basement is half-glazed with Gothic panes.
Developed by James Weekes and James Lockier to a design close
to contemporary ones by William Paty; let to Charles Melson,
who sub-let plots to individual builders. The interiors,
though common in plan and many details, vary slightly in their
spacing; they were completed by the purchasers, to their own
requirements, although many were not finished until 1802. Part
of a common development with Nos 48-86 (qv) on the S side of
Kingsdown Parade.
