ATHERINGTON ATHERINGTON SS 52 SE 5/14 Lemons Cottage -

GV II

Tenement farmhouse. C16 with earlier fabric probably concealed; upper end partly rebuilt in C20. Painted stone rubble and cob. Half-hipped thatch roof. Axial stone rubble stack with drip and tapered cap. Brick shaft to rubble stack at right end. 3 room and through-passage plan, possibly originally an open hall with stack inserted backing onto through-passage. Circa 1980 the whole parlour or higher end collapsed but leaving the hall/inner room partition and remainder of fabric intact, the collapsed portion being rebuilt in same style. 2 storeys. 2 window range. C19/C20 fenestration. 2-light casement to left, 3 panes per light with eyebrow dormer. 2-light casement, 6 panes per light at right end. Ground floor has three 2-light casements, 3 panes per light and replaced C20 window at left end. Short buttress to left of through-passage doorway with plank door. The lower end is recessed slightly. Leanto with corrugated iron room at right end. Small projecting stair turret to rear of hall. Interior: plank and muntin screens survive between hall/inner room and through passage/lower end. The hall screen is raised on a low rubble plinth, 7 planks wide with chamfered muntins, scroll-stopped at bench level. The top rail is also chamfered between the muntins. Chamfered surround to doorway through to inner room at right end with slightly cambered head. Screen between through-passage and lower end is 5 planks wide, also with scroll-stops near the base of the chamfered muntins but with unmoulded top rail. Chamfered surround to straight-headed doorway. Ceiling beam to lower end has wide step-stopped chamfer. There is no access to the roof space, but the feet of 2 heavy trusses, those over the lower end entirely cased in, and over hall indicating a pair of raised cruck blades with the soffit of a cranked collar visible, are set low enough into the walls to suggest the possibility of a former open hall house.
