Large manor house. Late C16 built by Sir John Dingley, completed in reign of James I, with C18 alterations. Main front faces south east and is E-shaped. Built of ironstone ashlar with Portland stone dressings. Moulded stone bands between floors and plinth. Tiled roof with 5 lower courses of stone slates. 3 brick chimneystacks. 2 storeys basement and attics in gable end. Centre part has 5 windows with central porch of 2 storeys which does not quite reach the parapet built of Portland stone with octagonal angle columns, cornice above each floor and 4 centred arched doorway with carved spandrels, 8 panelled wooden door behind and recessed diamond panel above this and 1 3-light casement window. 2 mullioned and transomed stone windows to north of 2 tiers of 3 lights. 2 12-pane sash windows to south in stone surrounds. The projecting wings have gables over with attic windows elaborate kneelers and stone coping. The north wing has 1 casement window facing east but ground floor has diamond-shaped blank with elaborate carving at corners. Inner face of north wing has 2 casement windows. North side has massive iron- stone external chimneybreast with 2 diagonally-placed brick stacks. 1 gable and 4 mullioned windows. The south wing has one 6-pane sash to attic and 2 12-pane sashes to other fronts. South wall has similar ironstone external chimneybreast with 2 diagonally placed brick stacks, 1 sash with keystone and gable with double mullioned window to attic. West front has central 2 storey projection with blocked C18 Venetian window. This was intended to contain a staircase leading off the Great Hall which was never built and became a brewhouse open to the roof. To the right of this are 3 12-pane sash windows (one double on 1st floor) and one mullioned and transomed casement and 4 centred stone doorcase. To left casement windows and massive external ironstone chimneybreast with 2 diagonally placed brick stacks and diagonal buttress. Main hall has 4 centred arched stone fireplace with shield and foliage in spandrels and early C17 panelling. The Billiard Room has an identical stone fireplace. South wing has an extremely fine Chinese Chippendale staircase with fretwork balustrading, scrolled tread ends and corner posts with quatrefoil design top and detachable urn finials. C18 doorcase with Greek key design. North wing has Jacobean solid well staircase, the centre with square framing and with brick stairs. Cellar has probable smuggler's hide plastered over. One 1st floor bedroom has early C17 panelling and a scrolled overmantel and stone 4 centred arched fireplace with paterae in spandrels. Another room has a Bath stone 4 centred arched fireplace with paterae to each spandrel and stone over- mantel. North wing has room with 1st floor stone fireplace with blank spandrels. At time of survey the Billiard room early C17 overmantel with 2 male and 2 female curved caryatids and the Great Chamber over-mantel. with 4 caryatids, pilasters and the arms of Sir John Dingley impaling Hammond were undergoing restoration in another part of the house. Wolverton was one of the original Domesday Manors and the present house replaced an earlier moated dwelling to the north.
