Formerly known as: Shalcombe Manor SHALCOMBE SHALFLEET. Large house on site of monastic grange, later a mill now house. Roughly L shaped building, the west wing C16 or earlier, altered in late C17 and heightened in late C18. South west wing a late C17 parlour wing and north west wing an addition of the C18 with late C18 or early C19 granary to north east, both probably dating from the building's conversion to a mill. Built of stone rubble with ashlar dressings but west elevation has some C19 brickwork to upper part of the wall. Tiled roof with end brick chimneystacks to south west and north west wings. West wing has 4 windows. 2 gabled dormers and 1st floor has 3 late C17 mullioned windows, the left side are mullioned and transomed and right side C20 mullioned window. Ground floor has left side C20 window in C18 architrave, central C17 mullioned window with hood moulding and right side C20 window. Off central cambered doorcase with hood moulding. 3 cross-shaped iron ties to attic. South east gable end has a tablet dated 1683 with the initials G.S. I with fleurs de lys to the corners. Attached to the north east end of this wing is a late C18 or early C19 2 storey granary with a flight of stone steps to 1st floor loading door. C20 mullioned windows to this elevation. The late C17 south west wing has 2 modern gabled dormers, 2 late C17 mullioned windows to 1st floor, 1 3-light, 1 4-light and ground floor has 1 late C17 3-light mullioned window with hood moulding to left and right side. C20 mullioned and transomed window in C18 surround. Cambered stone door surround. Blocked small opening to 1st floor. End quoins. North east wing, which is a parallel range to the south west wing is C18. Red brick dressings. 2 gabled dormers with 2 cross-shaped iron ties. 1st floor has 3 window surrounds with C20 casements. Grund floor has 1 C20 casement. West wing has Dining Room with 2 inch chamfered beam with elaborate stops, the lounge has a 5 or 6 inch chamfered beam and a small room behind has a beam with run out stop. 1st floor bedrooms at either end of the wing have splayed beams almost like dragon ties. South west wing has well staircase, the upper part retaining the c.1683 splat balusters. 1st floor has a late C17 fielded panelled room, formerly the Principal bedroom with cupboard doors with H hinges and a faded wall painting to overmantel depicting a shield with a device including 3 stags heads. 1 ceiling beam in this room is dated 1684. In the Domesday survey Shalcombe was listed as belonging to the churchh of St. Nicholas in the Castle Carisbrooke, but after the foundation of Quarr Abbey in 1132 it was granted to the Abbey and became a monastic grange until 1536. In 1544 Shalcombe passed into the hands of Thomas Hobson of St Marylebone and it is possible that part of the west wing dates from this time. There is a tradition that the principal bedroom was fitted out specialiy for a visit of Charles II. (C W R Winter: The Manor Houses of the Isle of Wight: 127 - 130).
