BICKINGTON BICKINGTON SX 77 SE 7/30 Nos. 1 and 2 Lower Lemonford -

- II

Pair of cottages, formerly a farmhouse. Late C16 or C17, with later addition. Solid, roughcast walls, probably of cob. Asbestos-slated roof, three-quarters hipped. In rear wall, at left-hand (south-west) side, a very large projecting stone rubble chimneystack with offsets, thatch weathering and tapered cap; added C19 shaft of red brick. Probably 2-room and cross-passage plan with added lean-to at rear. 2 storeys; lean-to single-storeyed. 3-window front. Windows are C19 wood casements with 3 panes per light, except for left-hand ground-storey window which is C20 without glazing-bars. Old plank door in old, plain wood frame, off- centre to right. In right-hand gable-wall, towards road, a late C19 or early C20 wood casement window in ground storey with 2 panes per light; small C20 window in second storey. Interior not inspected, but the large external stack appears to contain only a small C20 fireplace in ground storey. Owner of No. 2 (the lower end) says no features exposed in his part. The house almost certainly contains good early features concealed under plaster.
