House. C16, with mid C18 facade and flanking additions north and south of early C19. Timber-framed, plastered and whitewashed. Plain tile roofs. Plan is of the front range and older rear cross wings at right-angles. Facade of 2 storeys and dormer attic in 5 bays with a central 6-panelled and fielded door under a Y-tracery fanlight. Simple porch with Tuscan columns. Two 6/6 sashes either side and 5 to the first floor. Modillion eaves cornice below the bell-based gabled roof. 3 gabled dormers with leaded 2-light casements. External gable end stacks north and south. Abutting the north and south gables are single-storey brick extensions of the early C19. Doorway under arched head to north, intersecting Gothick arched window to south. REAR WING south front has two 2-light C20 ground-floor casements and 2 V-shaped projecting C20 casements above. Gabled roof with ridge stack. Outshut to north side of this wing. Rear of main front block with a staircase tower added c1730, and a privy tower added to that. INTERIOR. Main front room has bolection-moulded fireplace with Delft tiles. Closed string staircase in its tower c1740: turned balusters, ramped handrail and dado panelling. Many HL hinges to doors. Panelling in rear ground-floor room is of 1920s. Rear wing with heavy plain-chamfered bridging beams and C19 4-panelled doors to ground floor, but C18 2-panel doors to the first floor. Frame with C17 principal studs and chamfered tie beams. Blocked mullioned window at first floor. Roof of 2 tiers staggered butt purlins and collars, replaced probably c1740. The front range of this building is widely reported to be 1701-2, but no evidence found. (Double H: Stowmarket - A Book of Records: Stowmarket: 1983-: P.115).
