Includes: Nos.1-6 BOWDITCH ROW. Shop with row of 6 cottages to the rear. Early C19. MATERIALS: coursed limestone rubble with Ham Hill stone lower courses. Slate roof, hipped to the front; brick stacks to party walls. PLAN: double-depth plan, each cottage with one room to front. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. No.53 South Street has 2-window range to the front (south); 2/2-pane sashes to the first-floor; a small C20 window to ground-floor far right; a simple moulded shop fascia spans the front and the left return which has 4 lights of 2 panes below a 3-light casement, and a small C20 window to far the left of it; the front has lower cills and 3 panes to each light; 2-light to the left of the planked door and 4-light to the right of it. Bowditch Row, to the rear, is 2 storeys; No.1, behind the shop, is 2-window range, the others are one-window range. Flat stone arches over all openings. Plank doors; Nos 1 and 2 have 3-light casements each with two panes, the rest have 2-light casements with lowered cills and small panes. INTERIORS: only partially inspected. A good example of a row of early C19 cottages.
