Former market hall. 1837-38 datestone and inscribed: COMMENCED DURING THE/ MAYORALTY OF GLYNN GRYLLS. FINISHED DURING THE/ MAYORALTY OF JOHN SILVESTER. W HARRIS/ ARCHITECT BRISTOL/ W PENBERTHY AND P EVA/ BUILDERS. Granite ashlar front with rock-faced plinth and doorway rustication and shaped parapet with moulded cornice; sloping asbestos slate roof hipped at front and rear. Deep rectangular plan built on a slope up from the entrance. Single storey; front screen wall with 2 segmental-arched doorways framed by plain pilasters. Market doorway on left with pair of glazed and panelled doors and sidelights and tall overlight with small panels; doorway to open courtyard on right. Courtyard elevation is 11 bays with segmental-arched window openings; tripartite windows with 9 panes per light; central round-arched central doorway with planked doors and tympanum plus small doorway on right and wide doorway with glazed doors and overlight at far right. INTERIOR: original King-post roof structure. A very fine example, built with the guildhall (qv) during the height of Helston's prosperity resulting from the tin mining industry.
