GV II

Churchyard walls. Late C13 and C14 origins with several repairs since. Local stone rubble with rubble weathered coping. The 3 gateways are all probably C19. The east and west gates have plain square-section rubble gate piers, the former with low pyramid caps, the latter with flat caps. The northern gate piers are also square-section with low pyramid caps but are built of lightly-rusticated blocks of limestone ashlar. All flank C20 iron gates. The churchyard walls make an important contribution to the group of listed buildings in the vicinity of the Church of St Saviour (qv). Although the existing walls are probably mostly of C18 and C19 date, parts are probably earlier. The medieval churchyard was on the riverside and, up until 1584, ships would be moored to the churchyard walls. (Freeman, Ray: Dartmouth and its Neighbours: Phillimore: 1990-: P.77).
