GV II
Detached house. Early C19 with late C19 addition at rear. MATERIALS: stone rubble, rendered at front, roughcast on left side; when visited in July 1987 the right side wall had remnants of slate hanging. Asbestos slated roof. Bases of 2 rendered chimneys on left side wall. PLAN: double-depth plan with added closet wing. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with semi-basement and garret. House lies side on to the road with gabled 2-window front facing north. This has a rusticated ground storey with fluted Ionic pilasters and 3 round-arched openings. Right-hand opening contains a doorway, middle opening a sash-window, and left-hand opening a pair of French windows; the 2 latter both have glazing bars. In front of the whole ground storey is a glazed verandah on twisted cast-iron columns; solid wall at left-hand end, infilling of late C19 glazing at right-hand end. Upper storey flanked by panelled pilasters supporting a triangular pediment. Windows have moulded architraves and 6-paned sashes. In centre of pediment a pair of plain sash windows set in an elliptical-headed recess. Left side wall has barred sash window to right of upper storey. Closet wing has 2 windows with coloured glass. INTERIOR not inspected. The house appears on the tithe map of 1840 in an isolated position, surrounded by fields. (Ilfracombe Tithe Map: Devon Record Office: 1840-).
