TQ 3989 COLLEGE PLACE Walthamstow E17 (north side) 5/9 Forest School including main 19.10.51 block and extensions (Formerly listed as Forest School (original house)
GV II
School, formerly terrace of houses. Mid C18, with later C18 and C19 additions. Main block of plain brick; pitched tiled roof to parapet. 2 storeys plus dormers; 5 bays, centre 3 set forward with pediment above first floor containing thermal window, projecting central Doric, open pedimented porch with inset round-headed entrance. Square gauged headed windows, sashes, glazing bars. Console cornice above first floor. Attached blocks to left and right also C18, to left of 7 bays; to right of 3 bays with pedimented doorcase and dormer in form of Serlian window. Further extension to right including 2 storey, 4 bay block probably circa early C19 with full height canted bay window, flush framed sashes and glazing bars; also taller 3 storey, 3 bay block of 1886, by Richard Creed with giant pilasters, which forms front facade to 2 storey dining room wing at right angles, also by Creed, in the Perpendicular style. Original house with original panelling to entrance wall and rooms to either side, date C18, circular staircase; C18 fireplaces. Library lined with C17 panelling from chapel of Jesus College Oxford, and with panels of Medieval glass from Howden Church Yorkshire to one window light. Wardens drawing room with Soanesque decorations, shallow plaster vault and apsidal end.
