BETCHWORTH C.P. THE STREET TQ 24NW (West Side) 6/30 The Stables at 11/11/66 Betchworth House GV II
Stable block. Mid C18. Red brick with hipped slate roof on one range and hipped tiled roofs on southern range. L-shaped plan to south east with the block connected by a wall along the east side to the rectangular northern range, gardens in between. Southern block:- At right angles to house and road. Single storey with rusticated angle quoins and stone coped parapet. One 20-pane, glazing bar sash window under gauged brick head and one door of six fielded panels in panelled reveal and lugged architrave surround under pulvinated frieze and flat hood,to each side of central, arched carriageway. Each flanking door also has a blocked fanlight with wooden tracery bars. Left hand return front - (west face) - Originally two round-headed arched tripartite sash windows either side of pedimented entrance break with lunette windows in ends, all connected by impost band and under gauged brick heads. Now with two windows to left and lunette to right, blocked. Open pediment over blocked roundel to centre and door of 6 fielded panels under fanlight in lugged architrave surround, with cornice hood over. Rear (North side):- three stable doors under segmental heads and one plank door on west wing. Single storey shed links the stables to the east wall, approximately 4 feet high and partly rebuilt in C20, where it attaches to the northern stable block. Northern range:- South side (facing yard) - single storey, hipped roof wings flank central,square,pyramid roofed pavilion. Garage doors to right and two doors under transomes flank central window. Left hand wing has central door and flanking windows. Elliptical arch over throughway to centre with window above and weather- vane finial on roof. North side - loft door in central pavilion. The eastern wall connecting the blocks is a notable feature of the Village Street.
