Details

BEDALE MARKET PLACE SE 2688-2788 (west side) 8/28 No 40 (Kings Head) 22.8.66 (formerly listed as The Kings Head Hotel) GV II Public house. Early to mid C18. Brick, rendered, with Welsh slate roof. 3 storeys, 4 bays. Cement plinth. 2nd bay from left has a 4-panel door with overlight with side glazing bars. Doorcase with pilasters, consoles, frieze and cornice. Flanked by C19 canted bays with stone cills, 4-pane central sashes and 2-pane side sashes, friezes and cornices. Right-hand bay has carriage entrance with wooden surround of plinths, pilasters, frieze and cornice. 1st floor: 16-pane sashes with stone cills. 2nd floor: C20 casements, apart from 2nd bay from right which is blind, all with stone cills. Stone coping and end stacks. Interior: 1st floor:Jacobean-style chimney piece dated 'WW 1690', has architrave with 2 heads and shield below mantelshelf and above pilasters surmounted by male heads flanking large coat of arms.
