CASTLE ASHBY CASTLE ASHBY PARK SP8659 13/19 The Dairy 03/05/18 (Formerly listed as The Dairy House)
GV II
Dairy, now offices. Built c.1765. Limestone ashlar and coursed limestone rubble, slate roofs, stone ridge stack. 3-unit plan. 1 storey; 3 bays. Tripartite composition with tall central pedimented archway flanked by lower wings of 1 bay with lean-to roofs and half-pediments to front. Wings have 18-pane sashes with stone lintels. Centre projects slightly and is preceded by 2 stone steps. Elliptical-arched opening with screen of two Roman Doric columns and pilasters either end. Order has high bases, strong entasis and full entablature with triglyph frieze, and reaches to springing of arch. Central doorway to dairy within recess with panelled part-glazed door with stone lintel flanked by narrow 1-light windows with similar lintels. Horizontal oval window above door. Moulded impost band carried across wings to define base of half-pediments. Rear elevation of rubble stone. Wings project on this side and frame timber trellis-work verandah. Central door to dairy; horizontal oval window above. Interior has central room with high plaster groin-vaulted ceiiing. (Buildings of England: Northamptonshire: 1973, p144)
