Lime kilns. Early C19. Rock-faced sandstone ashlar with brick arched and spandrels lining furnaces. Massive retaining wall (approximately 12m high x 50m) divided into 6 bays by battered sections of stonework; entrances to each bay round-arched (approximately 2m high) on impost bands; dentilled band over each arch set under stonework. The forge forms part of a group at the head of the Caldon Canal, including tram- way terminus (q.v.), warehouse (q.v.) and bridge (q.v.). The canal was built circa 1779 to carry limestone from Caldon Low, the stone being brought down the steep incline to the canal head by tramway.
