Thorntree Farmhouse

II

Farmhouse, late C18 part rebuilding of earlier C18 house. Older
part behind coursed sandstone, remainder red brick in English garden
wall bond 4 and 1, with stone alternating quoins, on stone plinth.
Pantiled roof with stone ridge, copings and kneelers; brick chimneys.
Hearth-passage plan. Main house 2 storeys, 3 windows, irregular,
with lower 2-storey 1-bay downhouse. Wide boarded door in cross-
passage position. Modern flush casement to left with small 6-pane
sash above. Blocked doorway to right of centre. Replaced 16-pane
sashes under flat arches of sloped bricks with stone keys, that at
first floor centre probably an insertion. Small curved kneelers;
end chimneys. Rear elevation stone in lower part, 7 or 8 courses
above plinth. 2-brick band and brick above. 2 storeys, 2 bays,
irregular. 3 small blocked chamfered openings on ground floor, one
in fire-window position. One 16-pane and one tripartite sash;
upstairs a 12-pane and a tripartite window. Downhouse at right
raised by 8 courses in modern brick with 2 new windows, one in door
position.
Interior: 2 old chamfered beams, one in fire position, one on first
floor. Roof has stout pegged collar-beam trusses and trenched
through-purlins at 2 levels.
