Country House, now divided. 1890, enlarged in 1898-9 and part remodelled in 1914 by
Sir Edwin Lutyens, for W. A. Chapman, his first Country House. Red and brown brick
below with diagonal brick infilling to timber frame above on right hand side, tile
hung above to left. Rear originally in Queen Anne style now roughcast in Vernacular
style. Plain tiled roofs, some hipped and half-hipped with end gablets. L-shaped
range to front with courtyard in re-entrant angle and parallel range to rear left.
Right hand wing raised on terrace, with the ground falling away on the right hand
return front. Two storeys with large offset, star-shaped,end stack to right under
corbelled top. Two further star shaped stacks at junction of wings and corbelled
stack to rear of left hand range. Irregular fenestration of wood framed, leaded,
casements.
Right hand wing:- Two windows to first floor, one 4-light,with moulded sills. One
4-light window to ground floor and one small square window, under brick arch moulding,
in base of end stack.
Left hand range:- Two windows to first floor, one 5-light to left under half-hipped
roof, one 4-light to right. Tile hanging swept out over 3 ground floor windows, two
3-light, including one in single storey hipped extension to left.
Large gabled bay in re-entrant angle of wings with moulded bargeboards and pendant
finial. Oriel window with splay sides on two brackets to first floor, small 2-
light window below. Studded and ribbed door to ground floor in porch recess, up a
flight of brick steps with porch wall supporting turned wooden balusters above.
Rear elevation (Fig Tree Court):- Two storeys on plinth with hipped roof and projecting
end wings. Large stack to right of centre and diagonal, detached stacks to left end.
Wood framed casement fenestration in continuous strips, with brick mullions and
transomes on end square bays and in ground floor recess of centre range. Panelled
door to left of-centre.
Garden front (right hand return front):- Double, gabled range projecting to left
with recessed; tile hung centre and larger projecting range to right. Very
irregular pattern of roofs, chimneys and windows, with garden walls attached and
projecting to left half.
Interior:- Some wood panelling and ceiling frames. Plaster panel ceiling to ground
floor. Vaulted corridor linking two halves with round windows to each bay. Garden
by Jekyll of 1892 and 1902 and noted as historic by the Historic Gardens soc. q.v.
Garden Pergolas and walls.
