6/83 Barn about 80 metres east of Shawell Hall

Barn. Probably C17, walls partly rebuilt in C19. Flemish bond brick; earlier Flemish garden wall bond brick in south gable wall and east wall. Concrete tileroof with gabled ends. PLAN: 4-bay barn with opposing cart entrances in bay from south. C19 outshuton east side. EXTERIOR: west elevation has full-height cart entrance to right of centre with sliding double doors and another low farm building attached on left. East elevation has full-height cart entrance to left of centre and later lean-to outbuilding on right with slate roof partly reclad in corrugated iron sheets. INTERIOR: Fine C17 4-bay roof structured of heavy scantling; 3 tie-beam queen strut trusses with mortice and tenoned collars, clasped purlins, diminished principals with jowled apexes, ogee wind-braces and commom rafters without a ridgepiece. Mortices on soffits of tie-beam for braces. Timber wall-plate.
