Farmhouse. Circa 1600, with mid-C17 addition, partly remodelled in the
early C19. Timber framed with painted brick nogging on dressed red
sandstone plinth. Partly rendered and partly refaced or rebuilt in
painted brick. Slate roofs. Framing: close studding with middle
rail to ground floor of cross wing, and square panels to hall range (4
from sole plate to wall plate) and first floor of cross wing. Long
straight tension braces. T-plan; hall range of 2 framed bays with
projecting cross wing to south-west of 2 or 3 framed bays. Later
additions. Two storeys with cross wing of 2 storeys and attic.
South-east front: pierced decorative barge boards with finials.
square brick ridge stack to cross wing with toothed-brick cornice to
6 truncated star-shaped shafts and integral brick lateral stack to rear
of hall range with toothed-brick cornice and pair of C19 square shafts.
Integral brick corner stack to rear of cross wing with C19 brick shaft.
Hall range to right: left-hand part rebuilt in early C19 and eaves
raised, with first-floor 2-light casement and ground-floor 3-light
casement. Blocked C17 first-floor 3-light window with square mullions to
right. Central 2-storey c.1600 timber framed gabled porch; ground-
floor refaced in painted ashlar in early C19 with chamfered Tudor archway,
moulded cornice and battlemented top; early C19 five-panelled door
within, with moulded architrave; first-floor 2-light casement, and tie-
beam truss with raking struts. Right-hand gable end with first-floor
3-light casement and ground-floor square bay with 3-light French casements
and lean-to roof. Early C19 two-storey addition at rear with glazing
bar sashes and casements. Cross wing: pair of French casements, 2-light
first-floor casement and 2-light attic casement. Tie-beam truss with
2 collars and queen struts. Left-hand return front underbuilt in brick
Gable end at rear has cambered collar and tie-beam truss with queen
struts and V-struts. Later C17 wing adjoining to left. Timber framed
(square panels with angle braces), ground-floor underbuilt; graded slate
roof. First-floor 3-light C19 wooden casement and inserted C20 ground-
floor windows and doors. Left-hand gable end, rebuilt in dressed red
sandstone, has tie-beam truss with 2 collars and V-struts. Catslide
roof over outshut at rear. Interior partly inspected: early C19
staircase with open string, stick balusters, and wreathed handrail.
Chamfered ceiling beams.
