8/36 Gosmore House - - II

House. N wing early C16, main range mid C17, S end C19 or C20. Timber frame, largely cased or replaced by brick, stuccoed exterior, steep old red tile roofs. A large 2-storeys asymmetrical house set back in grounds, facing W. At N a 2-storeys crosswing adjoining site of former small open hall replaced by an internal-chimney, lobby-entry plan range with hall to N of stack, parlour to S of stack and stair probably to rear of stack. W front has gabled crosswing at LH and 3 small gables above the main upper floor windows each with bargeboards and pendants. Label mouldings over main windows and arched over upper window in LH gable. Small-panes casement windows of 3-lights generally. Projecting flat roofed central porch with half-glazed door with flat moulded hood on shaped brackets. Moulded cornice to 2-storeys semi-octagonal bay window on N end. Large internal central chimney with 3 conjoined diagonal shafts. Interior has wallplates of C16 crosswing lower than tie-beams of hall range. Chamfered and hollow stopped axial beams in hall range. Original timber lintel to fireplace raised. Partition on 1st floor over crossbeam in large room to S of chimney. Clasped-purlin roof with long straight wind-braces. (RCHM Typescript).
