1. 5255 KNEESWORTH STREET (East Side) No 23 (formerly listed as The Old Palace) TL 3540 1/3 14.6.64. I 2. Remodelling circa 1700 of earlier house. Red brick, gabled old tiled roof. 2 storeys and attics. Garden front has moulded brick cornice, 5 sash windows in flush architrave frames under flat arches; central 2 fold, 6 fielded panelled central door in surround of narrow fluted Doric pilasters under running fret frieze, dentil and modillioned cornice and pediment. Street front has 2 projecting chimney breasts, modern doorway with shell hood on consoles and fluted Doric pilasters. Modern "Queen Anne" fenestration and north wing. Interior: ground floor early C18 ovolo panelled room with semi-circular shell headed niche, original marble chimneypiece; staircase with central newel; some chamfered ceiling beams. Part of the Royal Palace inhabited by James I and Charles I.
