Station house, ticket office, screen wall and weigh-house. c.1865. By
the office of Thomas Prosser, Engineer and Architect to the North-Eastern
Railway Company. Rockfaced sandstone with slate roof; four stacks, two
rendered. 2-storey, 3-window house front with 1-storey, 1-window wing at
left; at right, 1-storey range comprising ticket office, screen wall and
weigh-house. House front has panelled double doors at right of 3-window
canted bay with chamfered ogee-stopped jambs, cornice and hipped roof.
Small 4-pane sash at far left end and similar, larger window elsewhere.
At right of doors is inset station clock in mounded surround.. Chamfered
eaves band. Crow-stepped gable ends and massive bulgy kneelers to main
roof and wing. End stacks to both roofs and inserted stack at base of
main roof at centre left. Ticket office: original doorway blocked by
shuttered window at right of ticket window. Crow-stepped right gable.
Screen wall further right has board door to former yard behind, and
weigh-house at right end contains squat 6-pane sash; crow-stepped gables
with bulgy kneelers at each end. Windows throughout have stone sills and
all openings have bordered rusticated lintels. Rear: 4-pane sashes, those
on house first floor blocked. Weigh-house toll window of four 6-pane
horizontal sliding sashes. Included for historic interest.
