East Lodges, with gates, gate-piers and railings
(Formerly listed as East Lodges, Farnley Hall)

Lodges, railings, gate-piers and gates. Late C18 with C19 addition. Ashlar
with Westmorland slate roofs. 2 lodges: square plan, single storey, one bay
each. South walls have sash with glazing bars in moulded architrave. Roll
moulded string. Dentilled cornice returned and to pedimented gable,
corniced ridge stack. C20 glazed door in moulded architrave facing onto
driveway from each lodge. Lower, 2-storey, 2-bay addition to right of lodge
to right. Gate-piers: ashlar. Square in section, approximately 5 metres
high. Chamfered plinth carries single solid block forming gate-pier. Roll-
moulded string and deep dentilled cornice as lodges, stepped cap with eagle
sculpture. Lodges and piers linked by low ashlar wall carrying railings
approximately 2 metres high with spear-head-finialed bars and roundels in
top and bottom rails. Gates: double-leaved with dog-bars, base rail with
fleur de lis and roundels. Lock rail and top rail of roundels, and spear-
head finials to bars. The East Lodge belongs to Farnley Hall (qv) and is
reputed to have been designed by J M W Turner who frequently stayed at the
Hall as a guest of Walter Fawkes (d 1825). Among the collection of
paintings by Turner is a fine picture of the Lodges, with Farnley Hall in
the background.
