SHERBORNE ROAD (North side)
The Pen Mill Hotel
- II
Inn. Said to be c1810, but remodelled c1855 for the coming of the railway. Ham
stone ashlar, with Welsh slate hipped roof. 3-storeys, of 3-bays to road (South
West) and side (South East) elevations. Central doorway with double 3-panel
doors, with cast iron diagonally glazed fanlight set in large plain Doric porch,
of bold projection, with full entablature. The ground and first floor windows of
12-pane sashes, but the second floor (possibly added in c1855) has low plinth,
and there are rusticated quoins. The South West return elevation similar, but
the central doorway blocked and a window inserted. To the left-hand side (North
West) a smaller scale 2-storey extension of 3-bays, also in ashlar with double
roof with coped gable, which may have formed a separate house: the 6-panel door
is central and has a projecting pedimented porch: there are two 2-light timber
casement windows to each level. The interior much remodelled c1970, but west
ceiling cornices remain. The one storey to the North West and the buildings to
the rear of interest.
