GV II

House and barn. Mid-late C17, restored mid C20. Coursed squared gritstone, graduated stone slate roof. 2-storey, 2-bay lobby-entry plan house with added bay to left; 3-bay barn. Quoins to left of house and to barn. House: the earliest part has a central C20 board door in doorcase with moulded quoined jambs and triangular soffit to large lintel, flanked by 3-light recessed chamfered mullions to ground and first floors, one mullion removed from each ground-floor window. A stepped continuous hoodmould at first- floor level and a blocked circular window to first floor centre. The bay to left has a C20 board door in an alternate quoined surround and a 2-light recessed chamfered mullion window to left (mullion removed) with similar window to the first floor. Bulbous kneeler and gable coping to left, large corniced stack opposite main entrance and a smaller stack at left gable. Barn attached to right: quoined jambs to byre door left; C20 sliding door to cart entrance which has quoins to left jamb. Added range at right angle, right, not of special interest. Rear (towards road): barn (left) has a fine central board door with moulded quoined jambs and triangular soffit to the lintel. House: a recessed chamfered window to ground floor, centre, the remainder C19 and C20 insertions. Interior not inspected at resurvey but reported to contain a fine moulded segmental-arched fireplace. The barn roof trusses are reused from a timber framed structure. North Yorkshire and Cleveland Vernacular Buildings Study Group Report No 255 (1976).
