6/156 Well House at 27.2.72 Croxley House (Formerly listed as Old Well House at Croxley House)

GV II

Well house with well head gear. Late C18. Timber mechanism in an open fronted brick building with a half hipped tiled roof. The well head winding gear is hand operated from a platform on the right side. An iron cranked handle turns a large open spoked timber wheel on a timber frame which engages large and small wooden cog wheels mounted on iron and timber axles. An iron toothed timber wheel over which the lifting chain passed is thereby set in motion. (Branch Johnson The Industrial Archaeology of Hertfordshire, 1970: Pevsner 1977).
